Batman, The Joker, Vagrant Story, The Pirates of Dark Water fandom asylums

[info]octopon - Pirates of DarkWater fandom asylum. Completed!

[info]gotham_gazetteCompleted!</i>

[info]vagrant_story - Vagrant Story fandom asylum. WIP; will be deleted unless more interest is shown.

And,

Please feel free to join [info]commedia; a personal project of mine, aiming to review and analyze comics (and other selected media) that feature DC Comics' The Joker.

It is currently a WIP because I am still going through my 500+ hardcopy!issues collection. I do not download torrents/scans.

I'd like to point out that currently I have two polls up for debate, as can be seen here explaining two routes the asylum's project can take. IE: spoiler free reviews, spoilerific reviews, and whatnot. =) Otherwise, the FAQ and The Rules are already up. The tags/memory post is still a WIP.

I am also open to affiliating with other comic book and/or Batman related asylums, except for RPGs.

hello ladies & gents! my name is ashley and i'm 20. i live in cincinnati, which means i'm a bearcats and bengals fan. i post random stuff A LOT. my friends page doesn't move enough :( so i'm looking for a lot of people to add. britney spears, sunshine, the gossip girl cast, football season, chipotle, kim kardashian, facebook, mascara, diet coke, forever 21, glitter and bright nail polish are some of my favorite things. my last.fm is here, if anyone is interested in our music compatibility. i'll add anyone!

Moral of the story: Don't Lie

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
So,  for a while, my grandmother (who is in her mid-80s) has been in and out of the hospital. It started when she fell in her kitchen and scrapped herself up pretty good. Since then she has claimed to have fallen in her apartment several times - each time ending up in the hospital.

It turns out that this was a lie. She had not fallen and she was just using the hospital to get attention from her family.

Okay, a little background. My grandmother has always been a little bit, no, scratch that...a lot manipulative. She has always been the first person to lay a guilt trip on somebody. It wouldn't matter how many times you visited with her or went over to see her, it would never be enough. And while you were visiting, you would be treated to all the gossip about everyone else - even people you didn't know. This talking behind other's back has cost her a friend that she had had for 25 years, but that is another story.

This leads to now, with her being in the hospital. While in the hospital she starts not only playing up the "can't walk" thing (yet refuses a wheelchair) but also starts telling falsehoods of neglect to the nursing staff. This leads to the staff calling in a caseworker from the state. She lied and said that her family never checks on her or visits her.

Grandma is assigned the caseworker and the woman calls all grandma's children (one being my mother). She tells my mother, my aunt and my uncle that grandma needs round the clock care and that they have 24 hours to figure out what to do with her.

Well, my aunt lives in a cramped trailer over 2 hours away, my mother is nursing a broken knee and is in the process of moving and my uncle - well, he has frickin' power of attorney over grandma, which is why he checks on her damn near ever day. But Grandma lied about people visiting her, so therefore the state thinks that the family is neglecting an old woman. This despite the fact that my uncle and my cousin, D, check on her on a daily basis and my other cousin, W, drives her around.

So, due to all her lies, she no longer can go back to her apartment. The apartment where she had a lot of freedom to do what she wanted to do and all the independence to do it.  Now, the state is going to send her right from the hospital to a nursing home. One in which she has to be signed in and signed out and they dictate the schedule.

Well, I hope that she is satisfied with what her lying has given her in the end. I am quite sure that it was not her expected outcome. I can just shake my head at the situation. She didn't want to go to a home when the family asked her before, and now, she will probably end up in the same one where she committed her own mother. Irony, this has it.

So, the moral of the story is: don't lie. See, people will find out and it will come back to bite you (even if it takes a while).  I wish I had sympathy for her, but knowing what a liar she is...it may seem awful of me, but I just don't.

I am sure the family can fight the state on the case of neglect to get her back into her apartment, but you know, she has so many of us burned out and just burned now, that I don't know how many of us give a damn. Hell, maybe in the nursing home she will have whatever she wants now - people who she can talk trash to about other people and the opportunity to bitch to us how she is being treated.  I hate to say it, but I don't recognize this woman any longer and I really don't like who she has become.

NAME: Michelle
AGE: 20

INTERESTS; I like mythology, folklore, legends-- any story rife with history and culture. I really love astronomy and psychology; socionics is a branch of personality psychology and it is AWESOME. Music, technology, science, books, art....I have been interested in everything but economics and politics at one point or another.

HOBBIES; Playing piano and lounging about in hot tubs with a book. When it is warm out I love wandering outside in the woods or in towns/cities (not New York sized cities though, they freak me out) and exploring; biking or boating are cool too. I like to write and create art, in lieu of that I find something else to alter....whether that merely be rearranging my room. Work and school, also-- I'm a Psychology and Archeology student, currently unemployed as well as waiting to begin winter semester as a transfer student. Looong wait, it has been 3 months and about 1 to go still.

LOOKING FOR; I'm not terribly discriminating. No spam? Intolerance and bigotry make me pissy?

ANYTHING ELSE; Well, my favorite television shows are Merlin, Doctor Who, and Sherlock Holmes (Granada...Jeremy Brett is awesome). Battlestar Galactica (reimagined) is probably the best show ever, though it isn't my favorite. I love reading intelligent yet beautiful writing, such as Oscar Wilde; I also really like Tolkien and Conan Doyle. Classic rock (CCR, Blue Oyster Cult, Metallica, Boston, etc) is just gorgeous, but oftentimes nothing can beat a good piano concerto. The Shining is the best movie ever. LOL  Now that I have bombarded you all with a string of slightly unrelated information....... ;)

Maybe I am getting to old to be in school or something, but I wish that some people in my psychology class would grow up.

Now granted, this is a 100 level class (and it is a last minute elective for me), but you people are in college now...be adults.

For example: today in class we are talking about emotion, which also includes arousal and goes to the theories on sex and so forth. Some people are giggling behind me while talking to their friend about how men are whores and such.

Maybe I'm a hardass, but I am here to learn something. And the sad thing is that the professor can barely control the flow of conversation around these assholes.

Numbers so far indicate we've lost Maine. Washington looking more promising but too early to tell. My dad came into my room turning the air blue over Maine -- he doesn't swear much, but he was pissed off. Me, I'm just cynical at this point.

I switched to Arch, which looks like the right level of minimalism for my main machine -- I'll revisit Gentoo when I've got a vacation to set it up in and/or a shiny new system to break (I want a cheapo computer for playing with, but I feel I shouldn't buy one for a while.)

In other news, I'm fed up with casual misogyny in geek circles.

I read almost anything. My recent read was The Other Boylen Girl, and it was sooo good. I love House. I'm looking for new friends because a lot of friends don't update and/or don't comment. I am such a people person, so I promise you will love me. I normally update about the most random things, from boy issues, to forking someone's lawn. Friends?

My name is Melissa, I'm 21 years old and I reside in Canada. I'm half Italian, half Black. I'm a Political Science major/minor in Philosophy. Right now I should be studying for my philosophy midterm but I'd rather make friends. I enjoy reading, writing, drawing, exercising, going to the movies, going out for fancy dinners, etc. I'm just really social and try to make friends everywhere (which is actually new for me, I was a self-proclaimed hermit). Part of me is really "feminine" in the sense that I'm high maintenance, I love make up, heels, hair, rainbows and fairy dust and at the same time part of me isn't. Trust me, I look really out of place at a Megadeth concert. I have a pet snake and a siberian husky. I was vegetarian for two and a half years and now I'm pescetarian (pesky tarian har, har). In my journal you will find lots of pictures, rants, the 411 on my life, discussions, etc. I'm looking for diverse amounts of friends, so feel free to add me!

Hi There.

Hello all,

What a year it's been. All I can seem to think to say is, 'Wow'. Some of these most extraordinary things have happened and I'm not even sure where to begin. It's all happened so fast and the only thing I've realized is how out of touch with things I've become.

Oh, not that I'm old and it's one of those generational gap things, not at all. I'm just...I'm not sure how I can explain it. People in the world today are so different in their views, they seem to think that everything happening is new or some how unique. Bad guys getting away with the loot, politicians acting like children, world gone mad, freedoms being experienced for the very first time, it's all so much to take in.

It's little wonder we're starting to question, well, everything. The saying goes, I think, 'these are the times that try men's souls'. I don't know about men's, but mine is sure feeling a little used. See, I made a little joke. It's what some people do when they're nervous and not quite sure what to say. Guess it just helps to have someone to say it to.

Do you need someone to talk to? I've got a free ear and some cheese cake.

Thanks for listening,

When the crazy of Nano just isn't enough LOL XD

No, seriously, this is a comm where, for the month of December, you work on those fanfics that have been sitting on ff.net, or your desktop (or wherever) for eons that still need to be finished, that you keep meaning to get to, but never have due to writers block, life, etc.

Or, if you have signed up for one of those nifty prompt tables, and never got around to doing anything with them...

Then December is the month to get these fics done :D

So stop by, introduce yourself, pledge to breathe new life into those dusty old unfinished fics :D

I am writing this in links (text-only web browser) just because I can. I have an operational Gentoo system. This makes me semi-elite (I won't be elite until I successfully customize my kernel; right now I'm using a generic one.)

Today, I'd like to talk about why I love Linux. Ahem. Cut for length; not scary, honest. )

Hacking makes me happy.

[info]das_dingsi: Thanks for the card! It helped dispel my gloom today. (Yes, punctuality is evidently not a feature of international mail. But that worked out nice, as it happens, because it's been stressful around here today.)

Everybody's grumpy from being sick and cooped up inside -- I think a fierce bad temper is one of the swine flu symptoms they don't list, because it was the first any of us showed and seems to be the longest-lasting. Matisse and Malcolm had a performance today they had to skip out on due to illness and having missed the crucial preparatory lesson, and Matisse got into a bit of a fight with Mum and Dad over that. I fought with Mum and Dad over some completely different stuff, which was trivial but seemed worthy of an all-out brawl at the time. My grandfather told my grandmother the other day that he wants to die, because his quality of life is so bad, and I'm pretty sure that's the biggest thing bothering Mum, who is snappish of late. Dad was grumpy because his computer (or rather, the printer) wasn't working. Meanwhile, I upgraded my distro with unusually destructive results, forcing me to reconfigure a bunch of files and hack up a fix for Firefox, and it installed Pulseaudio, which breaks my sound every time it sneaks past me.

So I decided it was about time I did the serious-hacker thing and installed Gentoo. I am writing this from my Mac OS X partition because GRUB is now misconfigured and when I booted OS X to have a bit more ease of Google it wanted to update iTunes and had to download the whole big file. Yep. My mum thinks I'm odd for finding new OS installs therapeutic, but the thing about banging your head against a problem like a misconfigured bootloader is that when you're done, you usually have a properly configured bootloader. It feels a lot better than dealing with my grandfather dying and my still not really registering it or having an emotional response beyond guilt at my indifference.

I can hack my bootloader now. Be right back.

I hate to quote Arnold here, but dear administration bigwigs, FUCK YOU. [Further obscenities removed]. You're splitting hairs and BSing outrageously to justify a law that violates the full faith clause of the constitution and the spirit of the idea of states' rights, not to mention the right to equal protection under the law. It's disgusting.

And now, a few key points about rights and freedoms:

1) Rights and freedoms are not granted. They belong to you whether or not society and the government recognize them. They cannot be taken away from you. To attempt to deny you the exercise of them is morally wrong.

2) Rights and freedoms are not earned. They belong to everyone, regardless of that person's level of morality, criminal status, or any other factor. Nobody is so low that they do not have rights.

3) Rights and freedoms have no meaning if they cannot practically be exercised. If a resource -- education, clean water, shelter, transportation, electricity, gainful employment, medical care, what-have-you -- that is vital to life, decent quality of life, or opportunity is prohibitively difficult to get, that is a violation of the basic rights of the people affected. This includes things being too expensive, not disabled-accessible, remotely located, etc.

4) No right or freedom extends to violating other people's rights or freedoms. Your right to free expression doesn't mean you can assault people, your right to your beliefs doesn't mean you can have people imprisoned for disagreeing with you, your right to use the public roadway doesn't mean you're allowed to mow people down, etc. This is the only restriction on rights and freedoms that is unquestionable, and that's why people can be imprisoned and otherwise penalized for robbery and assault and other crimes that directly violate the rights of others. Where crimes that don't do that fit in is a stickier question.

5) Rights and freedoms are not limited commodities, which must be denied to some because there aren't enough to go around.

6) Being of higher status than other people is not a right. Rights belong to everyone, remember?

HELLO EVERYONE!

my name is angela, i'm 23, straight-edge, tattooed/pierced, and i live in louisiana. i haaaaaate it here. i'm originally from florida and wanna go back so fucking bad but my boyfriend is going to school here now so w/e gotta live with it for now aka 7 years or something ridonkulus unless he can get his phD faster.

while my boyfriend is at school i basically play housewife all day -- i cook, i clean, and i take care of my baby (i.e. my 3 year old puppy named bowie <3). i have a part-time job at a lingerie store and i also model for godsgirls.com so yes i am naked on the internet (zomg!). i write about modeling and post (non-nude) pictures a lot.

ANYWAY, some things i like: body mods, modeling, animals, edgar allan poe, horror movies (especially the old black & whites), halloween, amazing music (mostly horror-punk, psychobilly, post-punk, 80s goth, etc), vintage fashion (40s-50s), make-up, and i don't even know. pretty much my entire life is zombies and spooky shit.

wow i wrote a lot. basically if we have stuff in common, you should add me. if you're a badass, ninja, sp00ky g0th, fashion victim, or if your life is anything like "it's always sunny in philadelphia" (minus the drunk sluts), you should add me.

The thing that sucks about this illness is that I don't feel that bad, except in the mornings, so I feel guilty for not being in class. Then I think about how sick Merlin was, and I think "I can't risk doing that to someone else" and then I wonder if I'm just inventing excuses. But he was pretty much unconscious on the couch for two days, zombie-like and mute when he was awake and vomiting frequently, burning with fever. This is a bizarre illness, because it seems to have hit me and Malcolm very lightly, Matisse more severely (she's almost never sick) and Mum and Merlin worst. Usually, I get it as bad as Mum, and Malcolm is the one who vomits at the drop of a hat.

Mum rented some videos to make her feel better. We watched Monsters vs. Aliens (my suggestion; it's actually good!) WALL-E (overhyped in my opinion) and some episodes of Underdog, which Mum insists she loved when she was little ("how little?" Dad asked her, and she said "oh, maybe three" and we believed her because that was so not something we would've ever chosen to watch. I've lost my exposure-to-racist-cartoon-portrayals-of-Asians virginity now -- I mean, I'd seen the WW2 propaganda posters, but I hadn't heard the horrible accents. Oh, and there were "Indians" too, and believe me, those quotation marks do not begin to cover the wrongness here.)

Yesterday I picked up the copy of The Ear, the Eye and the Arm I bought on my birthday. It was a remarkable book. Here's the basic outline: the year is 2194, the place Zimbabwe, where three children who are perpetually confined to their parents' mansion to protect them from their father's many enemies sneak out for an adventure, get kidnapped, and end up spending a while enslaved in a former toxic waste dump, living with a group of people who have shut themselves off from the outside world to keep African tradition alive, and nearly being killed by evil interdimensional beings. Er, not at the same time, you understand. Meanwhile, a detective agency made up of three mutants -- the titular Ear, Eye and Arm -- is trying to track them down. It's my favorite genre, the coming-of-age story, set in a setting I'd never seen before. Oh, and it's not-so-subtly feminist, but if I told you much or any of why I'd be spoiling it, because all the Crowning Moments of Feminism are bits where a woman/girl suddenly does something cool when the narrative seemed to be leading up to a man/boy doing it, and they're mostly plot-relevant.

Incidentally, another book we got on my birthday was And Tango Makes Three, because Matisse insisted it was our patriotic duty. Sure enough, there's a good reason it was banned -- Merlin read it and soon announced that he wanted to be a penguin when he grew up. I knew it was promoting the penguin agenda!

Meanwhile, the world keeps on turning....
